Washington's Birthday or Presidents' Day?
The federal holiday on the third Monday of February is officially called Washington's Birthday, in honor of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Most people know it as Presidents' Day, and many states and businesses use that name, often to honor Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is February 12, or all presidents.
Washington was born on February 22. The holiday used to be celebrated on that date, until the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the third Monday of February. Because that Monday always falls between February 15 and 21, the holiday never actually lands on Washington's birthday.
In 2027 it falls on Monday, February 15.
How the day is observed
Federal offices, banks and many schools are closed, and some school districts give a full mid-winter break that week. Stores hold Presidents' Day sales, especially for cars, mattresses and appliances.
Mount Vernon, Washington's estate in Virginia, holds events around his birthday, and in the Senate a senator traditionally reads Washington's Farewell Address each year.
Federal and state names
Because the holiday's name is not the same in every state, you may see it listed as Presidents' Day, Washington's Birthday or a combination of names. The day off is the same for federal employees in all states.
