Why do Americans celebrate the Fourth of July?

Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress, in which the thirteen American colonies declared themselves independent from Great Britain. The vote for independence actually took place two days earlier, but July 4 is the date on the Declaration and became the national birthday.

Two signers, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both died on July 4, exactly fifty years after the Declaration.

Fireworks, parades and barbecues

The day is celebrated with fireworks, parades, concerts and family barbecues, and red, white and blue decorations everywhere. Large fireworks shows take place in many cities, such as New York and Washington, D.C., and many towns hold their own parade. Hot dogs, hamburgers and apple pie are classics on the menu.

It is also one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.

When July 4 falls on a weekend

Independence Day is a federal holiday. If July 4 falls on a Saturday, federal employees get Friday, July 3 off; if it falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday, July 5. Fireworks and celebrations usually still take place on the Fourth itself.

In 2027, July 4 falls on Sunday, July 4.
