What is Labor Day?

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, honors American workers and the labor movement. It grew out of the late nineteenth century, when unions organized parades and demonstrations for better working conditions, including the eight-hour day. Several states adopted the holiday before Congress made it a federal holiday.

Unlike in many other countries, where Labor Day or May Day is celebrated on May 1, the United States marks it in September.

In 2027 it falls on Monday, September 6.

The unofficial end of summer

Labor Day weekend is seen as the unofficial end of summer. It's a popular weekend for a last trip to the beach, a barbecue or a camping trip, and one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Many public pools close for the season afterwards.

In many parts of the country, especially in the Northeast, schools start the week after Labor Day; elsewhere the school year has already begun in August. The college football season kicks off around this weekend.

Is Labor Day a day off?

Labor Day is a federal holiday, and federal offices, banks and schools are closed. Most private employers also give the day off, although retail and hospitality are often open, with many stores holding Labor Day sales. As it always falls on a Monday, there's never an observed date.
