Fall back

Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday in November. At 2:00 a.m. local time, clocks move back one hour to 1:00 a.m., so that night is an hour longer. Standard time then applies until the second Sunday in March.

Each time zone changes at 2:00 a.m. local time. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, so for them nothing changes. Standard time is the normal time of each zone, such as Eastern Standard Time or Pacific Standard Time.

What changes

After the change it gets light earlier in the morning and dark earlier in the evening. Phones and computers adjust automatically; other clocks need to be set back by hand.

People working overnight work an extra hour. Most people adjust within a few days; young children may take a little longer.

Why the first Sunday in November?

The current dates come from a federal law that extended Daylight Saving Time by several weeks. Before that, it ended on the last Sunday in October.
