Spring forward

Daylight Saving Time starts on the second Sunday in March. At 2:00 a.m. local time, clocks move forward one hour to 3:00 a.m., so that night is an hour shorter. It ends on the first Sunday in November, when clocks fall back an hour.

Each time zone changes at 2:00 a.m. local time, so the switch moves across the country from east to west. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe Daylight Saving Time, and neither do Puerto Rico, Guam and the other U.S. territories.

What you need to do

Phones, computers and most connected devices update automatically. Clocks on the wall, the oven, the microwave and in the car need to be set forward by hand.

Many people feel the change in their sleep for a few days. Going to bed a little earlier beforehand helps.

Will Daylight Saving Time become permanent?

Congress has considered bills to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, and many states have passed laws to do so if federal law allows it. None has taken effect, so clocks still change twice a year.
