What is Whit Monday?
Whit Monday is the day after Whit Sunday, or Pentecost, and falls 50 days after Easter Sunday. In many European countries, including Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, it is a public holiday. Its date moves with Easter, between mid-May and mid-June.
In 2027 it falls on Monday, May 17.
Together with Whit Sunday, Whit Monday forms the Pentecost weekend, the last of the great feasts of the Easter season. In countries where it is a day off, it is a popular weekend for short breaks, outdoor events and fairs.
Whit Monday in the United States
Whit Monday is not observed as a holiday in the United States, and most people have never heard of it. Offices, schools and businesses are open as usual.
Some churches with European roots, such as Lutheran congregations of German or Scandinavian origin, still mention the day in their calendars, but there are no public celebrations.
It does matter if you do business with Europe: in many European countries the day is a public holiday, and banks, offices and shops may be closed. Memorial Day, on the last Monday in May, sometimes falls in the same week.
